Fazal Ilahi Sheikh was born in New York City in 1965. His father, Abdul Majied Sheikh, was born in Nairobi, Kenya in 1941. His grandfather, Sheikh Fazal Ilahi, was born in 1900 in the part of Northern India which since partition in 1947, has been Pakistan. This family thread has drawn Fazal Sheikh across three continents, back to the places where his father's family and his grandfather's family lived long before he was born. And in the attempt to uncover his own family, history, he has been thrust into the lives and contemporary conflicts of those people, many of them refugees from civil war, who have settled, however temporarily, in those countries today. The Victor Weeps (Scalo, 1998) traces his family history back to the region of northern Pakistan on the borders with Afghanistan, where his grandfather was born, and where in the past two decades refugees had fled both Soviet occupation, and then
