November 22, 2011. Impact craters along a simulated airstrip in the live-fire zone of the Naḥal Masor basin. The Israeli Air Force (IAF) uses dummy bombs−weights without explosives or detonation−to target the airstrip from above and register the accuracy (see 32). This region of the Aravah in the Jordan River Valley lies below sea level and to the south of the Dead Sea, with a high groundwater content and a soft silt-like soil, the surface of which shows the dark crust of high flint content. The surface registers the flash-floods that erode and transform the topography. Throughout the image are the markings of Israeli army heavy vehicle ground maneuvers and U-shaped targets, marked by the striations of the mechanized building up of the perimeter.
