November 13, 2011. Walled farm south of Ovdat/‛Abdāt demarcated by low walls that follow along the streambed, most likely originating in Byzantine era. The farm is within an area that is cordoned off and run by the Desert Research Center of Ben-Gurion University in Sde Boker. The parallel lines of clustered rocks help retain and channel the water during scant periods of rain. The squares and circles–delineated variously by low fences and incisions within the surface that appear within the perimeter of the farm, and measuring a few meters in diameter—are isolation areas used for a detailed analysis of the traditional farming techniques. The site is a few hundred meters upstream from the experimental Avdat farm, run by the Israeli botanist Michael Evenari (see 15).
