A young woman drowsy from study in the middle of the night fell asleep at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. She was in the common area of her dormitory at the university. Someone flipped on the lights, waking her up. The police soon arrived.
Police told the woman: “We determine who is allowed to be here or who’s not allowed to be here, regardless of whether you feel you’re allowed to be here or not.”
She was black, studying migration and identity formation. The woman who called the police was white, studying philosophy and women’s rights.
Why do you, as a black person in America, feel you are allowed to be here? What makes you think a black person can be a woman? Can you prove you are human?
