The Moon Is Behind Us

The Moon is Behind Us is an exchange of images and letters between Fazal Sheikh and the writer and activist Terry Tempest Williams made over the summer of 2020, after their collaboration was halted by Covid-19. What began with a gift of 30 images from Sheikh resulted in 30 unexpected responses from Tempest Williams, one for each image over one cycle of the moon. His gift had prompted more philosophical considerations of the ways they connected to contemporary events.

When placed together, both artists felt this could be offered to others — an intimate personal correspondence between two leading political artists at a time of crisis.
