November 13, 2011. Narrow tributaries along the southern end of the Hawarim River. In order to optimize the retention of water, stones have been piled in shallow ridges through the stream bed, functioning as a dam to catch and store the water. Signs of shallow plowing along the perimeter—carried out in order to clear debris and scattered rocks from the catchment area, thus allowing water to flow unimpeded into the small-scale dams—suggest that the space is still in use by the Bedouins. Nearby is Midreshet Ben-Gurion (also known as Midreshet Sde Boker), the educational center and boarding school where the former Prime Minister lived until his death, and where he and his wife, Paula, are entombed (see 17).
