November 13, 2011. Pitas, targets to simulate enemy (here Egyptian and Syrian) installations (see 1). The live-fire zone, established on former pasturelands of the ‘Azāzmah tribe, is not far from the border with Egypt. Much of the southern and western sections of the Negev are considered off limits and open only to the Israeli military. These spaces are intended to seal off the border zone and obstruct the passage of the Bedouin communities. Nearby is the Ashalim communal settlement, founded in 1979 and named after the original Naḥal (see 68) settlement of Ashalim, founded in 1956 between Mashabei Sadeh and Nitzana. Ashalim is among a number of development sites for solar power in Israel.
